Naga Students Union Delhi Members Arrested By Delhi Police
- NSUD (Naga Student's Union, Delhi) -
New Delhi, 10 May 2010
A peaceful 'Dharna' staged by a collective of leaders and representatives of the different tribes near the PM’s residence asking for immediate action by the centre government on the recent incidents turned ugly when the protestors were taken into custody. All the 50 or more protestors, including 3 girls and some who were on the way to the venue at the time of the arrest, were all taken into custody.
The Dharna was held, despite their ongoing examinations and work commitments, as an act of appeal to the centre government to ensure the safety of the Nagas in Manipur and an immediate action against the Manipur Government. The President of NSUD was also taken custody amidst slogans for justice and they continued their slogans even while being ushered into the police bus.
This arrest led to a furor of panic back in Nagaland and among the Nagas in Manipur as the situations appear to remain tense.
The Naga Students Union Delhi also express its profound concern on the attack of former Naga Students’ Federation Speaker Mr. G.Vashum, Mr. Chuba Ozukum, General Secretary Naga Hoho and Mr, Nipuni Phiku, Human Rights Convenor ( South) , Forum for Naga Reconciliation at Hotel Grande in Kohima. Although the motive is still unclear, we hope the authorities find the miscreants and proper judgement be meted out to those responsible.
Meanwhile, the situation in the 6 districts seem to have taken a turn for the worst. Latest news states that the main pipelines of more than 8 villages had been damaged by the Manipur Commandos on the 6th and 7th of May during the mayhem, leaving the villagers to survive on rain water and non-drinkable water. The villagers are being grievously affected and left surviving. More than a 1000 villagers are camping at Kisama village in Kohima district while 90% of the approximately population of 6000 have fled their villages. There have been reports that the Manipur Commandos and the IRB were instigated and commanded by the Kuki community to continue the harassment and the violation of human rights on the innocent Nagas in Manipur. This move, if true, can be seen as an act to trigger communal disparity.
