"Youths Action On Climate Crisis" at Thoubal Wangmata, Manipur
PR from North East Environmental Youths Movement (NEEYM) & 350
"YOUTHS ACTION ON CLIMATE CRISIS"
ORGANISED BY: NORTH EAST ENVIRONMENTAL YOUTHS MOVEMENT (NEEYM) & 350
VENUE: THOUBAL WANGMATA, MANIPUR
On 24TH October 2009
Background of 350.org:
It is an international campaign dedicated to building a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis--the solutions that justice demand. Our mission is to inspire the world to rise to the challenge of the climate crisis--to create a new sense of urgency and of possibility for our planet.
Our focus is on the number 350--as in parts per million, the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. But 350 is more than a number--it's a symbol of where we need to head as a planet. To tackle climate change we need to move quickly, and we need to act in unison--and 2009 will be an absolutely crucial year.
This December, world leaders will meet in Copenhagen, Denmark to craft a new global treaty on cutting emissions. The problem is, the treaty currently on the table doesn't meet the severity of the climate crisis--it doesn't pass the 350 test (www.350.org).
In order to unite the public, media, and our political leaders behind the 350 goal, we're harnessing the power of the internet to coordinate a planetary day of action on October 24, 2009. We hope to have actions at hundreds of iconic places around the world - from the Taj Mahal to the Great Barrier Reef to your community - and clear message to world leaders: the solutions to climate change must be equitable, they must be grounded in science, and they must meet the scale of the crisis. If an international grassroots movement holds our leaders accountable to the latest climate science, we can start the global transformation we so desperately need.
Background of NEEYM:
Environmental degradation, habitat destruction, pollution, water scarcity, biodiversity loss, depleting forest cover, cultural pollution, big dam construction and its environment and social implications, social unrest - are but a few of the issues demanding immediate attention in India's North East Region.
At the same time, a relative reluctance of the Central Government to act and a simultaneous (and consequent) exodus of a majority of the youth population only add fuel to the fire which is engulfing the NE region. Now, with the threat of climate change looming large, the only option is to come together for sustainable development of the region, before time runs out and most, if not all, is lost.
With this backdrop, the North East Environmental Youths Movement (NEEYM) is being setup in the National Capital Region of Delhi to bring together and raise awareness among the youth from North East India and set up a nation wide movement with a similar objective. The degradation to North East India's environment and the unplanned and ad hoc "development" activities taking place in the region will impact the future generations much more severely than it is impacting the present generation.
The future of youth in the North East and of all generations hereafter is at stake and only a path of Sustainable Development can save the region from imminent destruction. But taking this path is a decision that needs to be made. And clearly, the policy makers in the eight North Eastern states (and at the Center) have not been able to take this call so far. However, it is not them but us who will bear the consequences of this in the coming decades if not years.
Therefore, we now have a choice. Either we, the youth belonging to the eight North Eastern states of India (viz. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim) can sit back and watch the steady destruction of our natural resources, general disinterest shown by our elected representatives in dealing with environmental matters and vested interests that are operating in the region and playing with our future OR we stand up and take action to protect not just our own but also the future of generations to come. "Youths Action on Climate Crisis" is thus the first step in this direction, inviting all those who feel that time for action is now. It is OUR future and it is us alone who can be the change and make a difference.
Today, 24th October 2009, we (NEEYM & 350) are organizing an awareness program (From 10am- 12.30pm) on climate crisis for RUDA ACADEMY, school students and together discussed the issues of CO 2 emission level (387ppm) and importance of cutting down the level at 350ppm together and sending a proud message "Together we can save "Mother Earth", Let's do it Now!!! to the world leaders who are going to present at Copenhagen Climate Treaty in Dec.2009.
