Mapithel Dam Affected Ching-Tam Organization
Thoubal Multipurpose Project
The Mapithel Dam Affected Ching-Tam Organization (MDACTO) a body representating affected villages of Mapithel Dam, after a thorough deliberation on 28 August 2008, have come to the understanding that there has been no proper assessment of the impact of the dam on those who will be affected by the dam and its components.
Though the dam construction has been on for more than two decades, the affected people has either been neglected and sidelined with no proper rehabilitation and resettlement. It is also observed that the dam authorities have not even bothered to study the impact on the downstream villages, despite global recognition that they are the worst affected when dams are built.
In view of this, we would like to bring to the notice of the dam authorities, construction companies and dam supporters that the affected people demands, among others,
A. Complete assessment of impact – economic, social, and environmental – both downstream and upstream. &
B. A complete Resettlement and Rehabilitation study and implementation plan prepared with the full and active participation of the affected people as represented by MDACTO.
Further, it has been resolved that until these demands are fulfilled, MDACTO will take stringent measures, including stoppage of all activities in the dam area, non-cooperation with dam authorities, eviction of dam related people from the villages etc.
This has been unanimously agreed and supported by the members of MDACTO.
