Manipuri diaspora funds relief camp at Nongmaikhong and Khodrak
- PR from EMA (European Manipuri Association) -
London, UK, 22 May 2009
The European Manipuri Association is pleased to inform that it took part in the organisation of a medical relief camp at Nongmaikhong and Khodrak in Manipur. The
camp was organised to help children traumatised by the ongoing violence and military operations, such as Operation Summer Storm, in the state so that they could return
to normality and lead successful lives.
|
Around one thousand people attended the camp in which various local volunteers, doctors from RIMS and JN Hospital, journalists, and members from the Health Department and numerous local clubs such as NAYA, NYS, NDSYC, KIC, YASOK and KWO took part. Notable amongst the local organisers and participants are Dr. N. Motilal, Director of the Health Department, Dr. L. Fimate, Director of RIMS, Dr. Y. Mohen, Superintendent of RIMS, Dr. I. Rajiv, Health Manager of Bishnupur District Health Department, Dr. R. K. Lenin, Associate Professor in the Psychiatry Department of RIMS, I. Arun, editor of Ireibak newspaper, Dr. N. Jiten, Research Associate at the Indo-Myanmar Studies Research Centre, O. Ratan, Y. Rajeswor, E. Satyajit, and S. Rakesh.
|
The camp would not have been as big a success as it turned out to be without the dedication and sincerity of these volunteers, some of who also made monetary contributions of their own. Seven school locations were covered in total and medicines, toys, notebooks, pencils, board games, and footballs were distributed during the camp besides providing medical help and counsel.
The European Manipuri Association would like to thank its members who proposed the idea of organising this event and raised the requisite amount of ~Rs. 100,000 to turn it into a reality. EMA would also like to take the opportunity to thank members of the Manipuri community, especially those in Europe and Bangalore, who responded very proactively to the monetary appeal.
|
It is hoped that such an event will showcase how Manipuris residing around the world can bring about positive social change in Manipur through active partnerships with dedicated local volunteers.
