Demonstration in front of Manipur Bhavan 24th September 2009
and Memorandum to PM
New Delhi, 23 September 2009
Recently state authorities in Manipur carried brutal crack down on democratic protests, arrested several human rights defenders under false charges and tortured them with impunity. The current series of mass protests in the state follows the shocking murder of Chungkham Shanjit and Thokchom Ongbi Rabina Devi at a market place in Imphal town and in broad daylight on 23rd July 2009 in a fake encounter by Manipur Police Commandos.
Also, several activists of the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO) and the Apunba Lup as well as environmental activist Jiten Yumnam have been detained under various draconian Acts like the NSA and UAPA. Medical reports accessed by the media also indicate that Jiten Yumnam has been subjected to torture by the police.
This situation is absolutely unacceptable. Immediate steps must be taken to redress this crisis of democracy. In solidarity and support to the people of Manipur in their mass peaceful actions for the restoration of democracy, a public protest is being organized on 24 September 2009 at Manipur Bhawan at 2 pm.
