A hundred candles were lit in Munirka Village
PR from Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network(MWGSN)
New Delhi, 31 October 2009:
To highlight Delhi's increasing violence against women, especially women from the North Eastern parts of India, representatives from several women's groups and civil society organisations held a candle light vigil in Munirka Village area on October 30, 2009.
The protest was jointly organised by Centre For Advocacy and Research, Human Rights Law Network, Jagori, North East Network, Saheli, Sama, Sangat, TARSHI, Control Arms Foundation of India and Manipur Women Gun Survivors Network.
The groups collectively mourned the death of young 19 year old Ramchanphy Hongray from Ukhrul in Manipur state who was brutally murded in the area on October 24, 2009.
Yesterday as night fell, many of us went and lit a hundred candles in the house where Ms Hongray died and later had a silent protest march through the narrow lanes and bylanes of Munirka Village to spread the message that violence against women needs to be stopped.
