PM to raise NE rebels, Stilwell Road issues with Myanmar
Seven Sisters Post | Gautam Debroy | New Delhi (Apr 17):
Aware of the increasing Chinese support to the Northeast insurgents based in Myanmar, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is likely to ask the Myanmar authority to take strong action against the rebel groups. During his forthcoming visit to the neighbouring country, Singh is also likely to urge the Myanmar authorities to take steps to reopen the much-expected Stilwell Road.
The 1736 km Stilwell Road w as built during World War II and connects Assam’s Ledo to Kunming in the Yunnan province of China through Changlang and Myanmar. The reopening of the road is also important for India’s Look East Policy. The road will cut the transportation costs between India, Myanmar and China. Although New Delhi already gave its assent for the road, Myanmar has reportedly not agreed to reopen the Stilwell Road.
The Prime Minister will meet Myanmar President Thein Sein and pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi during his May 28 to 30 official visit.
