One Billion Rising: Imphal observation at BOC and in front of City Convention Hall on Feb 14 2013

Indigenous women along with supporting individuals and organisations from all walks of life in Manipur joined hands on Valentine’s Day today to come out on the streets at Palace Compound, Imphal, Manipur to join the global campaign to call for an end to violence, and for justice and gender equality.
Forum for Indigenous Perspective & Action (FIPA), Centre for Organisation Research & Education (CORE), Women in Governance (WING), Human Rights Alert (HRA), Oriental Pumpkin Events and Communique, WOL Media, EREIMA Gender Empowerment and Resource Centre and the Manipur Cycle Club joined hands with many others in a multi-dimensional event that includes ritual prayers, chanting, music, recitations, narrations and dancing to show collective resolve and strength, solidarity across borders and communities and reject gender based violence.
While women rising to protest gender based violence and calling for an end to all forms of violence is nothing new in Manipur, and the world has witnessed dramatic, peaceful and historic forms of protest in Manipur in the past decades against armed conflict, violent crimes both by state and non-state actors, state repression and violence, impunity by Indian security forces under draconian legislation rejected by the world. It is an irony that in spite of all these events and efforts taken up by civil society organisations and individuals on gender based violence and other forms of gross human rights violations, nothing much has changed towards the improvement of this situation.
The recent rise of reported rapes, sexual abuse and harassment, torture and other forms of ill-treatment, murder, arbitrary detentions and other forms of rights violations perpetrated against women all over the country and especially involving women in North East India is an attestation to the lack of real concerns, sincerity and efforts to improve the situation. The fear psychosis, insecurity, discrimination, manipulation and injustice and deprivations among women continue to go unabated.
On this occasion we salute those who laid down their lives for the struggle against gender violence and for the cause of peace, and express our solidarity to those who have suffered different types of violations around the world and reaffirm that violence against women is violence against humanity.
