Northeast, from biodiversity hotspot to ecological disaster
Nagaland Post | Dimapur, May 13 (NPN)
Both biodiversity and ecosystem of north east India, recognized as the world’s biodiversity hotspot and home to rarest species, is currently under serious threat from anthropogenic activities.
Due to untrammeled development and exploitation of natural resources for supporting mushrooming industries in the region and mainland India, the opal waters, fresh air and verdant rain forests are fast vanishing. Unlike industrial smog in other parts, the north east is plagued by growing traffic snarls and exhaust fumes.
The increased thrust for commodifying biodiversity and the associated knowledge as ‘resources’ by bringing them under the ‘protected’ regime of commercially exploitable Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) such as patents, plant varieties protection, geographical indications would only contribute to depletion of biodiversity.
