North East projects slow : Minister
The Telegraph | New Delhi, July 3
Union minister for road transport and highways C.P. Joshi has asked the ministry to immediately dispatch a special team of engineers, given the tardy progress of road projects in the Northeast, to keep tabs on the quality and pace of the projects.
In 2005, the Centre had kicked off a mega road development project under Special Accelerated Road Development Programme (SARDP). The government is currently spending Rs 33,500 crore in the region and working on a total of 10,000km of road.
Seven years later, the government is worried that possibly its investment in the region is in danger of going waste. “We have been getting reports that there is hardly any monitoring of the projects there. The projects are being managed by officials sitting in Delhi,” said a senior ministry official. The project had been taken up to provide connectivity to all 88 district headquarters in the Northeast by at least a two-lane road.
