North East's growth rate dismal: NEC
Seven Sisters Post | Shillong (June 8):
With the annual GDP growth of Northeastern region still struggling at 3.4 per cent, North Eastern Council (NEC) secretary UK Sangma on Friday gave a clarion call on the need to achieve 14 per cent growth in order to able to catch up with the national GDP growth of 7 per cent. Sangma, however admitted that it has been a difficult task to achieve the target given the fact that Northeast is still lacking in major private investment.
“Another major setback for the region is we don’t have the presence of multinational companies. The government alone cannot pump in funds to help increasing the GDP growth,” Sangma asserted. Lauding Shillong College for taking steps to groom young entrepreneurs through the setting up of the EDC, Sangma also assured NEC’s support to college’s initiatives.
