National Highway 39: 435 km of ethnic and socio-political minefields
Times of India | Jaideep Mazumdar | TNN | Jun 11, 2012, 12.56AM IST
As far as national highways go, this is quite short on length. But the astounding array of ethnic and socio-political minefields it traverses through, more than makes up for its modest 436 km. National Highway 39, which starts in Assam and winds through Nagaland to enter Manipur's trouble-torn hills, before slicing through the Imphal Valley and then making its way up through the hills again to end at Moreh along the Indo-Myanmar border, is like no other highway in India. It is a highway of sorrow, and also of the eager optimism that India's ambitious 'Look East' policy, whose success hinges to an extent on this highway, holds.
All vehicles entering Dimapur and travelling onwards on NH 39 are 'taxed' by this powerful and influential insurgent group that has its well-fortified headquarters at Camp Hebron about 35 kilometres from Dimapur and off NH 39.
