Naga talks: Way forward
The Telegraph | Patricia Mukhim | Oct 5
There are real issues that need to be addressed and that requires a climate of openness and transparency. If the Indian government under its present interlocutor comes up with a framework for discussion on the way forward, will that be shared with the Naga public? Or, will it be a closed conversation between the interlocutor and the NSCN (I-M) simply because the Indian government has recognised the latter as the official representatives of the Naga people? It is important for the Naga people to envisage their future because they have lived in suspended animation for 17 years, just waiting for a solution. What is the future going to look like? There has to be a road map so that people can engage with it. This road map cannot be kept in abeyance simply because the NSCN (I-M) leadership is insecure about the outcome of the talks. Should people start engaging proactively in determining their own futures?
In these 17 years of wait and watch, has the NSCN (I-M) built caring relationships and mutual respect? Or, have they talked past each other and refused to let their guard down and to see things from the others’ point of view? Much has changed in the way dialogues happen. The NSCN (I-M) leadership must exhibit a spirit of large-heartedness and respect alternate views. That is the only way to peace!
