Naga Art Revival Program- A Roaring Success
Kisama: 10 December 2013
The Hornbill Festival concluded today marked by the huge success of the Naga art and tattoo revival program initiated by the Headhunters’ Ink. The highlight of the event was a 2 day tattoo carnival organized by the Headhunters’ Ink team, offering free tattoos of ethnic Naga designs.
The 4 artists Mo Naga, Lemsentong, Taka Jamir and Nokrenmatang Soyah finished 14 brilliant pieces of Naga art in a two-day tattoo marathon session which saw the locals and the tourists enthusiastically getting inked in Naga art. This included a detailed portrait of a Naga child being inked on his father by Mo Naga.
Talking about the success of the event, “I thank all our supporters for appreciating our efforts. This was the best experience in my 9 years of tattooing experience. As an artist and researcher, it was a very fulfilling experience to not only share my findings, but also to tattoo them with our art. Headhunters’ Ink is a team of highly qualified artists and designers. We strive to bring back the Naga’s rich art heritage to its past glory.”
The last two days of the festival were fully booked. Such was the rush in the last two days that tattoo artist Alex Thaimei from Delhi joined in to serve as many clients as possible. A great many of the clients have offered to stay back after the festival and get their desired tattoos done in the supporting artists’ studio in Kohima and the Headhunters’ Ink studio in Guwahati.
The Naga art and culture revival program saw the inking of as many as 40 tattoos representing beautiful Naga symbols and stories, few of which are ancient tribal symbols which are almost on the verge of extinction. Few designs were modern Naga art which will now spread all over the world through the professionally crafted tattoos.
The revival and resurrection of Naga art through the medium of tattoos has been a roaring success with majority of the locals and tourist from all over the world who have embraced this program and passionately supported it throughout this festival and will continue to do so in future. As the mission statement of Headhunters’ Ink says “Naga history was always oral, but now, we will give this rich history a script through art and design.”
