Myanmar kids maids in Nagaland
The Telegraph | H. Chishi | Kohima, April 4:
A large number of children is trafficked from Myanmar to Nagaland to work as domestic help in gross violation of international human rights, a Myanmarese NGO working here claimed today.
The secretary of the organisation, Sherab, said poverty forced parents in the Naga-dominated areas of Myanmar to send their children to Nagaland in the hope that they would get education but most kids landed here as domestic help. He said girls are preferred as the demand for housemaids is high.
Sherab said there were over 500 children working in Kohima alone. The traffickers, who convince parents of better education for their children, get anything between Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000 for a child, preferably a girl, he added.
He said some traffickers were from Myanmar but the authorities had not been able to crack down on them because of the almost unguarded international border. There are a few Assam Rifles outposts along the Indo-Myanmar border but this has not been able to curb the crime.
