Myanmar's firewood, Manipur's delicacy
Seven Sisters Post | Yumnam Rupachandra | Tamu (Myanmar) Apr 5:
The mass withering of Yongchuk trees in Manipur has come as a blessing for Myanmar. Yongchuk (Parkia timoriana), a tree bean, has been a Manipuri delicacy since time immemorial whereas it does not feature in Myanmarese cuisine.
The withering away of the Yongchuk trees in Manipur, which experts say is due to factors such as climate change and pest attacks, has presented Myanmar with a unique opportunity to cash in on demand for the tree bean across the border.
Driven by increasing demand for the tree beans in Manipur, several Myanmarese have taken to the tree bean trade. Hefty profits have lured many into the trade of these beans. Sometimes, as many as 20-30 trucks loaded with Yongchuk make their way into Imphal.
