Myanmar economic reforms open up new vistas for northeast
Times of India | Nirmalya Banerjee| May 3, 2012, 10.25PM IST
The ongoing liberalization in Myanmar and the economic reforms that are expected to follow have opened up fresh opportunities for India's east and northeast regions; Kolkata Port is a likely beneficiary. But the question remains whether the government and the business sector are ready to make use of them.
The former ambassador warns that India must put its act together fast to seize the opportunity, For, competition for the Myanmarese market would be stiff with China and SE Asian countries like Thailand and South Korea in the fray. "To take advantage of the possibilities, the road network must develop in the NE. Production facilities would have to be set up and warehouses built to supply manufactured items to Myanmar markets smoothly," Sen points out.
Compared to the Moreh-Tamu border trading point between Manipur and Myanmar, facilities at the Ruili-Muse border trading point between China and Myanmar are far more developed, says Sen, with a good road network, parking slots, warehousing facilities and customs arrangements.
