My Village Byzantine Land
Jodha Chandra Sanasam *
In the welkin
dark clouds hanging low
whorls and whorls!
On the ground
dark smoke spreading
every nook and corner!
Men women children all in fear
scurrying here and there agitated
that is what my village has become
like the ancient land of Byzantine.
On the roads of Galilee ancient
passed they among milling crowds
helmets on their heads
daggers spears shields in their hands
it was chariots drawn by horses those days
whiplashing whoever passer-bys there were,
now it is cars smooth shining gleaming
people like chief Constantine Gallus of the ancient in them
followed by armoured Gypsy vehicles
people in combat-dress riding on them
with guns looking fierce.
Monkeys, male female weak
elderly monkeys frail
monkey-children born by monkey-adults
strutting on the roads
run away helter-skelter out of fright
giving way to the motorcade of gallant riders
before they bark out words
unworthy of humankind.
This village has become
more like the Borium Constantinople ancient
razed overrun by John Chrysostom of history.
It is not that they did not give their lives
many a native brethren
like Simon Barr Kochav, tears in their eyes
in the midst of this smoke.
We are fortunate, brethren of the present age,
to have the opportunity
to see the visage of history
that popped out like bubbles did
one thousand seven hundred years ago
once again right in front of our eyes
in this early part of the twenty-first century.
Would the days ever come back
one morning when the golden ray of the sun
glowing my brethren from the rear
as they walk smiling on the village road
without fear suspicion on their faces?
Would I ever have an opportunity
to see such a visage
before I go to slumber for good!
