My Freedom
Jodha Chandra Sanasam *
The colourful pennant
fluttering in the blustering emptiness
of this unknown firmament,
hoisted with musical supplication
and a song of my own choice
in solitude, above the patio
of my free world,
no guests invited,
it's the flag of my freedom.
No guns fired
nor shed a drop of blood
no sit-in-protest frayed
nor congregated a mass-protest
'Born-free', impromptu,
'Freedom' thus transpired in cahoots with me.
A mercenary group, I did not engage;
the sky, the wind and the environment
they are my army;
humanity, love of mankind is my defence;
behind me my soul as my security;
a confrontation with my freedom
is a confrontation with my soul?
Conspire not to ban my freedom
tear not this flag, flung on its own
mortify not the peace of my soul
suppress not this freedom of mine.
O Space! O Sky! O Mother Earth!
Give me my strength
so I never become spineless
to intone and sing about
this freedom of mine;
this freedom of mine.
