Moreh trade bears brunt of bandhs

Even as Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh prepares for strengthening India’s relations with Myanmar in view of the changing scenario in the country, the crucial cross-border trade along Moreh-Tamu continues to be dogged by various local and regional problems. The most recent problem that could become chronic is the demand for a separate Kuki state.
“It is good that the prime Minister is now engaging the Myanmar government. But first he must take care of his own backyard,” another trader said.
“We spend as much as Rs.1500 per vehicle as illegal tax to various groups including the police to cross 100 long Moreh-Imphal stretch of Indo-Myanmar highway. How can trade flourish under such circumstances,” asked yet another trader.
