The last batch of prisoners of the Guwahati Central Jail, including NDFB chief Ranjan Daimary and other jailed leaders of the outfit, will be ferried to the new building of the jail at Sarusojai on Sunday. The present jail campus at Fancy Bazaar, which was overcrowded, will be vacated within this week.
The newly-built Guwahati Central Jail, which can accommodate over 1,000 inmates, was inaugurated by chief minister Tarun Gogoi on April 30, 2010. Since then, the shifting of prisoners is being carried out in phases.
