'Manipur power shortage artificial'
Seven Sisters Post | Yumnam Rupachandra, Imphal (Apr 24):
According to former chief engineer of NHPC M Lalmani, who addressed a convention on Power Problem in Manipur organised by the All Manipur Power Consumers Association, the power crisis Manipur facing is because of manipulation and purely ‘artificial.”
According to the department’s own admission it has been selling power as Unscheduled Interchange Sale (UIS) on regular basis to other states despite power cuts in Manipur. In 2008-09 it sold 104.40 million units while in 2010-11 it sold 109.91 million units of power under UIS, which is resorted only when there is unscheduled breakdown. This has been happening since 2005 on a regular basis, he told the convention.
On the department’s claim of inadequate staff to serve power bills on time he said at 1:51 ratio of staff is to consumer, this is not an excuse. Manipur has only 157166 consumers as against 3637 employees, he said. Manipur with 60 per cent plus power loss due to transmission and other reasons which is one of the highest in the country.
