Manipur mulls action against those who let children go
The Telegraph | Imphal, Apr 25
The Manipur social welfare department is mulling legal action against the parents of 26 children, who were rescued from illegal children’s homes in Kerala a few days back. Most of the children, all under 12 years of age, are from Ukhrul district and they were taken there on the promise of being given free education by people known to the parents.
“We have received the report and will conduct a proper inquiry to find out how the children were taken to Kerala. According to the findings of the inquiry, legal action would be taken against the parents, if they have allowed the children to be taken away,” social welfare director Seityabati Devi said.
She added that since a Supreme Court ruling prohibited sending out children below 12 years from Manipur to outside the state, the parents could be treated as child traffickers and action taken against them. The apex court on September 1, 2010, directed the state government to stop sending out children below 12 years for education until further orders.
