Manipur home minister 'backs' NCTC
Seven Sisters Post | Yumnam Rupachandra | Imphal (May 11):
In the wake of the recent controversy and opposition t o the National Counter Terrorism Centre, Manipur home minister G Gaikhangam stressed the need for a mechanism to deal with terrorism. Keeping in mind the controversy and opposition surrounding the proposed centre, Gaikhangam did not directly support the Centre’s decision but said with terrorists acquiring capacity for terror across national and international boundaries, the need for a capable mechanism to defuse such acts was of paramount importance.
The home minister’s statement comes close on the heels of several civil society bodies, political parties and even proscribed armed groups opposing and condemning the proposed centre to combat terrorism. The groups had come down heavily on the chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh who had not opposed the centre at the Chief Minister’s meeting in New Delhi recently.
