Manipur draws CAG ire over dying fruit juice unit
Seven Sisters Post | Yumnam Rupachandra | Imphal (July 11):
The once flourishing “Manipur Agricultural Garden Fruit” (Magfruit), famous for its canned pineapple juice, today is a white elephant with recent CAG report castigating the state government for doing precious little to revive the dying unit.
As per the CAG report for the year ending March 31, 2011, which was tabled in the ongoing monsoon session of the Assembly, the factory now located at Lamphel in Imphal West could earn only Rs90,000 as revenue from sale of its various products as against a total expenditure of Rs2.39 crore — a huge gap between revenue and expense.
Manipur produces one of the finest pineapples in the Northeastern region. Its produces are canned and made into fruit squash and sent to other countries. At its prime the only government-owned fruit processing unit Magfruit used to export its produces far wide even getting thumbs up from countries like former USSR. But that’s all history.
