The year 1972 is special in the history of Manipur as it marked two new beginnings. One, Manipur got the status of a separate state and second, its first feature film, "Matamgi Manipur", hit the big screen. The film was released simultaneously at Usha Cinema and Friends Talkies in the heart of IMPHAL and Azad Cinema at Kakching in Thoubal on April 9. The film even went on to win the President's award. And with this film began the journey of Manipuri cinema.
Hindi films are now banned in Manipur by some underground outfits but this has become a blessing in disguise for the industry as it does not have to compete with glossy Bollywood productions. The latest feather in the cap of the industry has been another National Award bagged by the film, "Phijigee Mani", directed by Oinam Gautam. The film was adjudged the best regional film at the 59th National Film Awards for 2011.
Leishangthem Tonthoingambi, who played the character of Yaiphabee in the film, was also selected for the best supporting actress award. Borun Thokchom's " Silent Poet" got the best debut film award in the non-feature film category. The film is based on the life of Irom Sharmila, who has been protesting the imposition of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in Manipur and fasting for the past 11 years. The awards will be given away in Delhi on May 3.
