Manipur poll violence flayed
Morung Express | Dimapur, January 31, 2012:
The Naga Women’s Union of Manipur (NWU) and the Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) says they are appalled at the ‘display of violence’ by “various armed groups” during the 10th Legislative Assembly elections in Manipur state.
"We condemn the use of brutal violence by various armed groups against individuals who prefer to follow their own conscience and exercise their right to vote. As Naga groups, we are especially concerned with the way armed groups are attacking and harming individuals in the hill districts based on political party affiliation which is totally uncalled for," a note from the organizations received here today stated.
The two organizations appeal to "all the groups” to 'immediately desist from engaging in violence that has killed and maimed people.' The violence will only inflict bitter wounds to the people and would be counterproductive, they said. "We appeal to all to refrain from actions that will further divide the people. We also request the media people to be more alert and cautious while reporting sensitive issues and ensure that facts are verified and cross-checked before filing and printing the report."
