Making music and hao!
Seven Sisters Post | Debarun Borthakur | (Aug 28):
Musical genres don’t pop up as often as movies and that’s why their inception always fascinates musicians and audiophiles. They are often a product of an evolutionary process that requires ages to take shape. And more often than not, they are accidental outcomes of mere melodic experimentations by musicians. At a time when musicians in the Northeast are blending western musical sensibilities with folk in the name of fusion and what not, two novel genres are taking shape amidst the hills of Nagaland and Ukhrul district of Manipur — timidly and making just the essential sounds.
Howey and hao are the two recent entries in the list of musical genres in the world. Pioneered by folk-rock band Abiogenesis and veteran Tangkhul Naga musician Guru Rewben Mashangva respectively, these two genres are slowly yet steadily expanding their fan base among music enthusiasts not just in the region but also outside it.
