In this online edition of Makhol, we bring to you a candid conversation with Padma Shri Astad Deboo, Contemporary Indian Dance on his association with Manipuri artistes mainly through his creation of "Rhythm Divine ".
Rhythm Divine is based on the conviction that dance is a system of ideas, not a method, and that, together with music, dance can enrich the moral, the material and the intellectual spheres of life, leading to a new beginning.
Performing along with 8 Manipuri Thang-Ta dancing drummers, Astad Deboo blends with success Indian classical dance forms with modern dance techniques, creating his own style: a new idiom, an art of new forms that talk to each other in a contemporary way.
“Thang-Ta”, art of the sword and spear, is an exciting dance form that has been adapted from the ancient martial arts form of Manipur, in North East India. An original collaboration born out of Astad Deboo's 11-year romance with Manipur, where he came across Guru Seityabanji and his troupe of Pung Cholom drummers of Shri Shri Govindji Nat Sankirtan.
