SHRI M. SHENBANGPU
Akademi Award: Tribal Culture
Also known as Yaima Kabui, Shri M. Shenbangpu was born in 1950 at Chingkham Kabui Village, Lilong.
A noted exponent of tribal culture, he has been a tireless propagator of Kabui folk songs.
From an early age, Shri Shenbangpu developed a keen interest for the traditional music of his community.
From the elders of his community, he used to learn various folk songs of the Kabui tribe.
Over the years, he has specialised in various Kabui folk songs such as Balluh Luh, Lamlonluh Luh, Majaruh, Luh Rong, Luh Phai, Laam Luh etc.
He has also participated in several folk music festivals held at the State level and has won acclaim and appreciation not only for his performances but also for his efforts to preserve the folk tradition of his tribe.
A retired Superintendent of the erstwhile State Electricity Department, Shri Shenbangpu also composes devotional songs for Tingkao Rawang Chapriak (TRC), an activity for which he has received certificate of appreciation from Zeliarong Religious Council.
In recognition of his contribution towards the preservation and popularisation of tribal culture, Shri M. Shenbangpu is bestowed with Manipur State Kala Akademi Award.
