MLAs face heat over failure to enact ILP Act
Seven Sisters Post | Yumnam Rupachandra | Imphal (July 4):
As they gathered for the monsoon session of the Manipur state legislative assembly, the legislators faced pressure to adopt the Inner line permit act (ILP) that regulates entry of non indigenous people in the state. The Act, which is already applicable in the neighboring states of Nagaland and Mizoram, helps to protect its indigenous population and is seen as an answer to the bludgeoning non local population – which is fast stripping the indigenous people.
According to civil organisation “FRIENDS”, out of a total population of 22,93,896 , as per 2001 census, non indigenous outsiders with 7,04,488 population has already outstripped the indigenous tribal population which is at 6,70,782. By 2011 the non local population has stripped the population of the majority Meitei by 1 lakh, claimed the organisation.
