Low vote-value cloud hangs over Sangma : 8 states may not be enough
The Telegraph | E.M. Jose | Shillong, June 25:
The small vote share of the Northeast legislators and MPs will be a disadvantage for the Northeast strongman P.A. Sangma, who is banking on every single vote in the race for the post of the President.
Even if all Northeast legislators and the region’s MPs vote for him en masse, the total votes will come to only 47,452 whereas the vote value of the legislators of Uttar Pradesh alone is 83,824 and that of MPs of that state will be more.
The northeastern states, including Sikkim, share the least votes in the presidential election because of the small size of Legislative Assemblies and limited number of MPs from the region. According to the provisions of Article 55 (2) of the Constitution, in the presidential election, the vote value of a legislator is determined by the population of 1971 census. The vote value of MP is determined by dividing the total value of votes of legislators of all the Legislative Assemblies. While there are altogether 776 MPs (both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha), the vote value of a single MP is 708. The total value of votes of all the Legislative Assemblies of the country is 5,49,474.
