Low turnout leaves Manipuri Kumhei organisers disappointed
BANGALORE, February 5, 2012:
'Manipuri Kumhei, Bengaluru 2012', a Manipuri cultural festival, was held in the city on Saturday.
The event, inaugurated by D.S. Poonia, Chief Secretary, Government of Manipur, saw the screening of three acclaimed Manipuri films.
R.K. Nimai, Commissioner of Arts and Culture, Government of Manipur, said, “There are many youngsters from Manipur living in Bangalore. The festival was organised to remind them about our rich cultural heritage
"We wanted these youth to watch our films that have won both national and State awards. These days, they watch only Bollywood and south Indian films. We wanted to show that Manipur is also a leading film industry where nearly 60 films are produced every year," he said.
He said there were around 10,000 students from Manipur in the city. Mr. Nimai said the festival was actually an initiative by a few Manipuri professionals working in the city. However, low turnout at the event left the organisers disappointed. Hodam Pinky, who performed a classical dance, said, "Despite a lot of pre-event publicity through newspapers and Facebook, very few turned up for the event." "We received support from the governments of both Manipur and Karnataka."
