Look East Policy : Roadblocks for Northeast players

While polemics over conceptual orientations and ground realities continue in the absence of an official Look East Policy (LEP) blueprint, there have been many issues raised from the Northeast over the policy based on actual ground level trade relations between India and Burma.
A cursory look at economic cooperation emphasized in LEP indicates that there was a need for India to expand the scope for border trade vis-à-vis the country gradual emergence as one of the key players in global economy.
While there are several initiatives taken up between India and its Southeast Asian neighbours in general and Burma in particular as part of LEP initiative, some of these need to be viewed from the perspective of what can be best understood from a Northeast ground perspective. The significance of Burma lies in its physical and cultural proximity to the Northeast.
