Lihaaz presented an Evening of Classical Music at IIT Guwahati
`Lihaaz, a musical acknowledgement’, an organization at IIT Guwahati, run by Smt. Sabarni Dasgupta, presented an evening of Hindustani Classical music in Bhupen Hazarika Auditorium at IIT, Guwahati campus this Saturday (10th November). The first half of the program showcased the performance of the students that includes children of different age groups, residents and faculty members of this esteemed institute.
The program started with the uttering of shloka from Veda `Sarbeyatra Sukhinaha Santu’ by Sabarni. The introductory piece followed next was based on Raag Desh, neatly tied with a Rabindra Sangeet, a modern song and Vandemataram. Raag Yaman was then elaborated by the youngest members of `Lihaaz’ group. This was followed by a presentation in another evening raag Bihaag that included the famous bandish by Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, `Ab To Rat Laagi’ and a drut Tarana composed by Sabarni Das Gupta.

The first half concluded with a beautiful piece composed by Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty describing all ten Thaats of North Indian classical music; each Thaat was elaborated with a bandish or a thumri or a tarana based on a Raag within the Thaat’s merit. Mr. Prabhansu supported in Tabla for the first half. The program was well coordinated by Smt. Meghna Choudhury and Smt. Deepanwita Ghosh.
The second half of the program witnessed an enthralling performance by Sree Brajeswar Mukherjee, a well known vocalist from ITC SRA, Kolkata. He illustrated Raag Malkauns with a vilambit composition in Jhoomra taal, followed by famous composition in Ektaal `Dhint Langara Manat Nahi’ and ended with a fascinating Tarana in Teentaal composed by Pt. Gyan Prakash Ghosh.
Brajeswar’s last presentation, the famous thumri `Yaad Piya ki Aye’ created a huge impact on the audience. He was ably supported in Tabla by Sree Indranil Bhaduri, from ITC SRA, Kolkata and by Smt. Sabarni Das Gupta in Harmonium. The program also felicitated noted musician Pt. Biswajit Roy Chowdhury and music connoisseurs Mr. Satyen Sarma and Mr. Rathin Das Gupta.
