Licypriya Kangujam wins the prestigious TN Khoshoo Memorial Award 2020.
Nine Years Old Indian Environmental & Climate Activist Licypriya Kangujam wins the prestigious TN Khoshoo Memorial Award 2020 in recognition of her fight against climate change. The award was instituted in 2004 to honour the legacy of the world-renowned environmental scientist, Dr Triloki Nath Khoshoo. The award consists of a cash prize of Rs 1,00,000.
The award is presented annually by Ashoka Trust for Research on Ecology and The Environment (ATREE) to an academician or a practitioner whose work has had an impact in the fields of environment, conservation, or development. Dr TN Khoshoo was first Secretary of the newly created Department of Environment of the Government of India, in 1982. He played a significant role in the development of India's environmental policy. In 1996, along with Dr Kamaljit S Bawa, Dr Khoshoo founded ATREE.
The award encourages and promotes individuals for outstanding achievements in the field of conservation and sustainable development. The award is given only to great scientists and eminent personalities of the country.
Licypriya received the award on 24th November in a virtual event. The Academy also distributed the degree to its Ph.D. graduates. Some of the past recipients of this award are Sonam Wangchuk, Meena Subramanium, Dr Rajeswari Raina, etc. Licypriya is the youngest receiving so far since 2004.
“I was very surprised and can’t believe it when I first heard the news. I will not take this award as just an achievement but I will take as fixing more responsibility to me to save our environment for our better future”, said Licypriya.
“I have decided to donate this cash prize to give free education to arm conflict victim children of my country. It will give them a new ray of hope in their lives with my small efforts in the little capacity I have. Education only can bring peace and hope in this world.”

This award will boost more confidence in our future campaign and my child movement to fight for our planet and our future. This news will inspire millions of children around the world. I dedicate this award to all the climate activists friends around the world.”, she further added.
Licypriya has been actively fighting for climate justice in India and different parts of the world over the last two years. She is one of the youngest environmental activists and the leading voices for climate change in the World.
On Thursday also, she had addressed the world leaders and youths from over 142 countries in the opening ceremony of Mock COP26 UK. She played a crucial role in bringing the new air pollution law in India which was recently approved by the President of India under an ordinance to solve the delhi air pollution crisis permanently.
She is campaigning for climate education across the world and so far, the state of Gujarat, Rajasthan and Sikkim has given positive response to her and hundreds of private schools started teaching climate education in India and other foreign countries after her request. She has planted over 3 lakhs trees.
She also launched an initiative called “Monday for Mother Nature” where she plants thousands of trees with various school children every week on Monday with a mission to plant one million trees every year to make our planet green again.
