Licypriya Kangujam also urges Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and BJP MP Leishemba Sanajaoba to address climate change.
Eight-years-old climate activist Licypriya Kangujam storms the Parliament House of India to pass the climate change law in the ongoing parliament session in New Delhi on Wednesday. However police tries to stop her rally and later protested outside the parliament house addressing her three demands to PM Narendra Modi and MPs. She was joined by other young climate activists like twelve years old Arav Seth.
This is not the first time she is protesting outside the parliament house to pass the climate law addressing the Indian leaders. She also addressed the World leaders at the United Nations Climate Conference 2019 (COP25) in Madrid, Spain last year to take immediate climate action to save the planet and their future.
Speaking to the media, Licypriya said, “I am coming here to tell our Hon’ble Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi and our MPs to pass the climate change law as soon as possible from the paper to become action.”
She further said, “If they pass the climate change law then we can control the carbon emissions and greenhouse gases. It will stop new coal plants and destroy our forests for mining activities. It will also give climate justice to the millions of poor vulnerable people who are the victims of climate change”.
Licypriya Kangujam urge her demands to Lok Sabha Congress MP Shashi Tharoor -Rajyabha BJP MP - Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba on September 23rd, 2020
“You can just see in Delhi how air pollution is so dangerous. Even children can’t move out of the home. Government will announce that there will be holidays for three days, five days and again ten days but this is not the solution. Our leaders are just busy blaming each other instead of finding long term solutions. They are just telling the speech but they are not doing any action. I want our leaders to do more action otherwise our future will be dying soon. We want climate action now without wasting any more time”, she replied on a media question to her on Delhi air pollution.
Licypriya is also the founder of her own climate justice organization called the Child Movement. She has been raising her voice for over two years with three demands to pass the climate change law, to include climate education compulsory in school curriculum and to plant minimum ten trees every year by each student of India. She is also demanding clean air to breathe.
In India, there are over 350 million students. If 350 million students plant minimum ten trees every year then India will plant 3.5 billion trees a year. India can be green in next 5-10 years. And also, if the Government includes climate change as a compulsory subject in the school curriculum then climate change can be fought from the grassroots which will help India in achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030 to fulfill their promise of Paris Climate Agreement. She alone planted more than 50,000 trees in the last eight years.
Later, she also urges Congress MP Shashi Tharoor to fulfill his promise of March 7, 2020 to bring up her three demands in the parliament house. She even protested outside the official residence of Shashi Tharoor to raise her concerns in the ongoing parliament session.
However Shashi Tharoor sent her a letter stating that he will be unable to raise the issues this time in the parliament as Lok Sabha Session has been shortened because of the prevailing COVID19 situation in the country.
She also met with the King of Manipur & lone Rajya Sabha BJP MP Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba to raise her voice in the Parliament to save our environment. Maharaja also shared several initiatives taken by him to Licypriya. She also took the blessings of the King of Manipur.
