ASEAN Study Center, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong - A Brief
Prime Minister Narendra Modi first announced the establishment of the ASEAN Study Center in NEHU Campus, Shillong, and Meghalaya, India during the 13th ASEAN-India Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from November 21 to 22, 2015 . Less than a year after, on August 8th, 2016, the ASEAN Study Centre was launched. It is a milestone event as it coincided with the 49th Anniversary of ASEAN.
It’s the Govt. of India’s desire is that this ASEAN Study Center would serve all the stakeholders in Northeastern India and ASEAN in facilitating ASEAN-India research projects, studies, workshops and related activities. It will also serve as a repository of information on the North East India-ASEAN partnership.
With the Indian government actively pursuing its Act East Policy to boost trade, and commerce, the ASEAN Study Center would also strengthen the cultural relations between ASEAN countries and India, especially with the Northeastern region whose ethnic tribes share similarities with the neighboring countries. The Northeastern region is at the core of India’s engagement with ASEAN and it’s Act East Policy.
MoU signed by The Vice-Chancellor of NEHU and Professor Bundhit Eua-arporm, the President of the Chulalongkorn University (CU), Bangkok
In pursuit of reaching out to the ASEAN region and particularly the younger generations of students and researchers, the first MoU was signed with Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, on 10th January, 2019. Professor S.K. Srivastava, the Vice-Chancellor of NEHU, Shillong and Professor Bundhit Eua-arporm, the President of the Chulalongkorn University (CU), Bangkok.
The MoU was the outcome of the earlier visit of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong and followed by the visit of the members of the delegation from Chulalongkorn University. The MoU signed ensures and guides concrete cooperation between the two Universities in compliance with Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn initiatives to promote Academic cooperation between Thai & Indian Educational Institutes.
It is also noteworthy to inform that under the terms of reference of the MoU, scholars from both Chulalongkorn University and NEHU will embark upon the research project entitled "CU-NEHU Innovative ASEAN-India Academic Cooperation". The project enjoys the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhom and is supported by the Thai Research Fund.
