Laws unto themselves forever
The Telegraph | Arup Kumar Dutta | May 14
No matter how vital and exigent an issue might be, by attempting to bring life to a complete halt through call for a bandh in its support deprives others of their rights. The daily worker loses a day’s wage, restricted mode of travel inconveniences thousands, businessmen lose out on sales, industries suffer disruptions in production.
A new weapon lately taken up by anarchic elements is blockade of roads to draw the attention of authorities to grievances. The uneven nature of the terrain as well as an environment hostile to facile communication has made travel and transportation difficult enough, especially for people in the more inaccessible areas. For instance, much of the essential items to a state like Manipur, in the absence of a railhead, are carried by road. The prolonged blockade of the national highways to that state had created a nightmare for the unfortunate inhabitants of the region, giving unscrupulous traders valid excuses for jacking up prices.
Today, it is a universally acknowledged fact that the entire Northeast is in the thrall of an epidemic of bandhs, road blocks, violent protests thereby ensuring that a less developed part of the country remains as undeveloped as ever. The primary reason for people becoming laws unto themselves is the general apathy of the administrations concerned to public grievances, as well as the “could not care less” attitude of political entities which have remained for long in the saddle of power without even making pretence at good governance.
