Laiphrakpam Ashok Kumar Singh was born on 12th February, 1953 at Langmeidong Maning Leikai.
He was the son of Maton Singh and Manjuri Devi.
Ashok Kumar completed MA Geography in 1977 from Agra University, Archives Science from National Archives of New Delhi in 1985 and also attained Museology degree from National Museum, New Delhi in 1988.
He started working at Manipur State Kala Academy in 1978 and in 1985, he started working as Archivist in the Academy.
He had worked under prominent persons like Elangbam Nilakanta, Pandit Khelchandra, Rajkumar Sanahal Bikom and O Bhogeshori.

‘Chahicha 18 Mamanggi Ariba Manipuri Sahitya gi Paring’,
‘Chahicha 18 amasung 19 gi Ariba Manipuri Sahitya gi Paring’,
‘Chingu Maichou Samurou Chigong’,
‘Chingu Khoiyum Lainingthou Mongbahanba Laiphamlen etc.
Ashok Kumar wrote over 150 articles on topics of Manipuri Literature and Culture.
He was the former General Secretary of Naharol Sahitya Premi Samiti. He died in 2017.
In recognition of his contribution to ancient Manipuri literature and culture, Manipur Sahitya Parishad, Imphal conferred Gaveshnabhusan posthumously to Laiphrakpam Ashok Kumar Singh on the 83rd Annual Conference.
