'Konung Kang' turns 160
Seven Sisters Post | David Mayum | Imphal (June 21)
The Konung Kang which started during the time of Maharaja Gambhir Singh has turned 160 years on Thursday. The gigantic iron wheels of the over 60-year old Konung Kang were presented by the Japanese troops while retreating from the theatre of World War II. The chariot (Kang) is 61-foot high.
A widely held belief and accepted whole heartedly is that unless the Konung Kang sets off from Shri Shri Govindaji temple in the heart of Imphal, no other Kangs of the state can be pulled by devotees during Kang festival. This age-old convention is still in practice.
