'Jhum cycles hit Manipur ecology'

ncreasing jhum cycle and rising expenditure have made tribal people turn to deforestation for their existence. This was stated by president of Sylva Krishi Vigyan Kendra Haokholet Kipgen to highlight the problems faced by people in hills of Manipur while welcoming the secretary of DARE and director general of ICAR, New Delhi Dr S Ayyapan, who was on a whirlwind trip to the centre located at Henbung in Senapati district of Manipur on Saturday.
Mr. Kipgen, a former minister, said jhum cycle use to be once in 12 years in the past but now the cycle has increased to once every 5 years reducing the tribal farming system of jhumming unsustainable.
