Whether in old age or a youngster, to be able to walk is a gift of god which no human can deny. Unfortunately, for 72-year-old Keisham Ibecha, life took a change when she lost her ability to move her right leg.
The aged woman from Thinungei locality in Bishnupur District had consulted several doctors in the last four years so that she could walk again but to no avail. However, in a miraculous turn of event, Ibecha regained her hope when she met Dr. Angamba Heisnam who is the Joint Replacement Surgeon at the state-run Jawaharlal Nehru Institue of Medical Science.
Under the recommendation of the Dr. Angamba, the woman was admitted to the Orthology department of the lone government hospital in Imphal. Dr. Angamba took the decision that a total replacement of the knee cap would be essential for the woman to be walk again.
Accordingly, the decision was taken and the woman was operated on May 9 and kept under the supervision of the 35-year-old doctor from Keishamthong.
Dr. Angamba said the operation was the first of its kind in the state and was a success to a great extent. He continued that the woman and the family would have faced a lot of problem if they had to travel outside the state to avail medical facility.
Ibecha on the other hand, do not have to endure the financial costs for the medical expenses and the difficulty of moving, as she had the operation performed at JNIMS. Dr. Angamba said these type of operation generally costs around Rs 4 lakhs if done outside the status but to be able to perform the operation in a government-run hospital is indeed a great achievement.
Meanwhile, the head of the department, said not being able to walk in old age can lead to other sort of illness as well and the patient becomes vulnerable to all other forms of age-related medical problems.
Dr. Angamba and his team of doctors of Ortho department in JNIMS not only made an old woman walk again but by doing so have successfully scripted a new chapter in the history of Manipur medical.
