The award was announced by Dr Kamei Aphun, Assistant Prof. DSE , Department of Sociology and it was handed over by Prof. Virginius XaXa , Tata Institute of Social Science (Guwahati).
The 2015 Irom Sharmila Scholarship has been jointly awarded to Mr. Khumukcham Chinglen Luwang, from Manipur currently registered for an MA in History in Delhi University and Ms. Rohi Jehan, from Kashmir, doing an MPhil at the Centre for West Asian Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia. Both Chinglen and Rohi have faced situations of armed conflict and have a keen appreciation of the struggle waged by Chanu Irom Sharmila against AFSPA. They have the potential to take the democratic movement for constitutional rights forward in innovative ways.
The Irom Sharmila Scholarship was instituted by faculty from Delhi University in 2012. It is open to any post graduate student (MA-Phd) enrolled in any educational institution in Delhi in any subject who comes from an area with internal armed conflict, including Northeast, Kashmir and Central India. The award is based on a combination of financial need, academic merit, contribution to society and suffering as a result of armed conflict. The scholarship is a lump sum of Rs. 50,000 (Rs. 60,000 if shared). (The criteria may change in future years).
The award is open for applications from November 4 onwards, which is the date from which Irom Sharmila began her heroic fast against AFSPA and the announcements are made annually around March 14, her birthday. Sharmila’s fast has been going on now for 15 years and is a symbol of the hope for justice against impunity.
This year’s applications came from all institutions in Delhi, and included deserving students from both Kashmir and Northeast India. The jury consisted of faculty from Delhi University. In the past two years, the award has gone to Iymon Majeed from Jamia Millia Islamia, and Seram Rojesh from Delhi University.
