Illegal adoptions taking place in hospitals/nursing homes

A meeting of Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR)
A meeting was held in the office of the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) at 11:00 am on 28/12/2018 with the Chairperson in the chair and representatives from MCPCR, SARA, DCPU, SAA I/W, Childline I/W and IWCDC regarding illegal adoptions in Manipur.
It has come to light that a trend of illegal adoptions has been taking place in hospitals/nursing homes/clinics/health centres in Manipur through monetary exchanges (between seller and buyer).
It is also learnt that in some cases advance payment was made once a woman gets pregnant. Expecting mother and father was lured with financial assistance and also the promise of better future for their
unborn/newborn child.
During the meeting, the Commission has assured for directing to setup cradle points in all hospitals/nursing homes/clinics where maternity facilities are available with appropriate mechanism.
In the meeting, the Commission assured that if necessary/required, MCPCR may recommend for modication of existing CARA guidelines in relation to Manipur context.
In view of the situation, the Commission will organise poster/leaflet campaigns, intevention programs with Superintendents, doctors and nurses.
