oneindia | Friday, January 27, 2012, 10:35 [IST] | New Delhi :
With the much anticipated Assembly elections of 2012 to kick off starting from Manipur on Saturday, the Home Ministry has issued a terror alert ahead of the elections. The ministry has raised its concerns on the presence of a terror outfit interfering with the poll process in the state.
Following the alert, the state security forces have increased vigilance to ensure free, fair and safe elections. With the campaigning over in Manipur, the new terror angle has put authorities on alert over the Home Ministry warning.
Sources within the Home Ministry have stated that they have information that the banned terror outfit 'National Socialist Council of Nagaland' (NSCN) is interfering in the poll process in the state and claim to be openly supporting the Naga people's front. The NSCN also called for a 36-hour bandh bringing trading and commercial activities to a standstill.
Only yesterday (Jan 26), a low intensity blast rocked Manipur during the course of the Republic Day celebrations. Though no casualty has been reported. The IED blast occurred around 9 am at Thumbuthong, some 100 meters away from the 1st Battalion Manipur Rifles parade ground. As per police sources, the bomb is alleged to be planted by the cadres of CorCom, a conglomerate of seven underground outfits, boycotting the day by calling state-wide general strike.
