Heart ruptured but life saved at SKY Hospital
A young lady, Mrs. M. Bindiya, 34 years old, wife of Mr. D. William of Chandel District was admitted as emergency case in SKY Hospital, Imphal West on 2nd July 2018 when her heart ruptured. The condition is called Rupture of Sinus of Vasalva (RSOV) into right ventricle. Such condition is usually fatal unless promptly diagnosed and treated appropriately.
Mrs. Bindiya rushed to SKY Hospital after attending 2 other hospitals. When she reached SKY’s emergency department, her condition was really serious with her chance of survival was only 70%. Her blood pressure & Oxygen level dropped. She developed heart failure and was in distress.
While resuscitating her in the following hours, the diagnosis of RSOV was confirmed with Echocardiogram (Heart Scan) and Trans-oesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE). Such condition (RSOV) is usually treated with emergency open heart surgery to close the ruptured site. However, she, being a lady did not want a long and big scar on her chest and requested for non-operative closure of the hole/rupture site.
After careful assessment, the rupture site in her heart (RSOV) was closed with a Device in the shape of a dum-bell, made of alloy wires, size: 20 mm/18 mm on 8th July, 2018 successfully. The procedure was performed in a specialized room called Catheterization Laboratory (in short, Cath Lab). It started at 11:50 am and finished at 1:10 pm. Within an hour, Mrs.Bindiya started to talk, drink clear fluid and felt “like a normal person” and discharged home on 15th July, 2018. After the first post-op check up on 23rd July 2018, she was allowed to return to her home at Chandel District.
Dr. L. Shyamkishore, Chief Cardiologist of SKY Hospital appealed to the people of Manipur to be aware of this fatal disease, RSOV. When it occurs, Device closure of the rupture site is a safe and non-operative treatment option to conventional open heart surgery and should be offered to such patients.
