GNLA looks to Manipur for ammo
Seven Sisters Post | Cosmos Sangma, Tura (Apr 17):
Insurgent-hit Manipur is fast becoming the favourite destination of Garo militants to shop for sophisticated arms and ammunition as contacts in neighbouring Bangladesh have been giving it a thumb’s down, sources said.
As far as the ownership of the seized consignment is concerned, it belonged to the GNLA, and was routed all the way from Manipur,” a senior Meghalaya police official, who did not wish to be identified, told the Seven Sisters Post. He also said statements by arrested militants and intelligence inputs show that the GNLA has been stockpiling weaponry coming in from Manipur.
“Manipur is a booming arms market where supply is more than the demand and hence the necessity to reach out to militant groups as far as to Meghalaya. The arms of Chinese origin were shipped in through the porous border with Myanmar (Burma) and Moreh is one indicator,” said the top security official from Meghalaya.
