Fruit-processing hub to come up at Andro
The Telegraph |Imphal, June 21:
The Andro area of Imphal East is set to become a pineapple-processing hub in the coming years thanks to the efforts of Development Organisation, Andro Kendra — a local NGO. The NGO has worked hard to promote pineapple cultivation and helped growers manufacture pineapple juice that will soon hit the market.
Pineapple is available in the state for almost eight months a year. An estimated 10,000 hectares are under pineapple cultivation producing around 70,000 tones of the fruit annually.
According to experts, there is a huge potential for pineapple processing and exports owing to the agro-climatic conditions of the state. And farmers are immensely benefited from growing pineapple. “I have been growing the fruit across one hectare of a hill slope for the past few years. I earn nearly Rs 1 lakh per season,” said Loitongbam Jamuna Devi, 45, one of the participants of the fair.
