A Week-long Free Children Heart Surgery Camp at SKY Hospital concluded
For the first time in the entire North Eastern India, a Week-long Free Children Heart Surgery Camp was conducted at SKY Hospital, Imphal from the 3rd March to 9th March, 2019 jointly organised by Healing Little Hearts, United Kingdom, Manipur Heart Foundation and SKY Hospital .
Altogether 9 children from Nagaland and Manipur with various birth heart defects were operated during the camp. Each operation lasted for 5 to 6 hours. During the post-operative period, each patient had to be closely monitored in post-operative ITU with ventilators and other cardiac support for 24 to 48 hours depending on the seriousness of the condition of the patient.
Age of the children ranges from 2 months to 14 years. Patients are being discharged home 4 to 9 days from the date of operation.
The children who benefited from the free camp are:
1. Master Manthai Phom, 2 months old boy, S/o Chingkam Phom from Dimapur, Nagaland.
2. Lalsuanglawn, 6 months old girl, D/o Hrangliensang from Saidan Village, C.C.Pur District.
3. Yanglem Pari, 2½ years old boy, S/o Y. Dananjoy from Arong Heibongkhong, Kakching District.
4. Th. Rishita, 2 years 11 months old girl, D/o Th. Romesh from Heirok Part I, Thoubal District.
5. N. Nelson, 3 years 6 months old boy, S/o N. Nimai from Nongpok Kakching Mayai Leikai, Imphal East District
6. Master Songam, 9 years 6 months old boy, S/o Rocky Chithung from Skip Village, Kamjong District.
7. O. Christina Chanu, 10 years old girl, D/o O. Mani Singh from Heingang, Imphal East District.
8. A. Thanil Devi, 13 years old girl, D/o (L) A. Sova from Yairipok Pechi, Imphal East District.
9. Shaiman Heisnam, 14 years old boy, S/o of H. Nabachandra from Hiyangthang Maning Leikai, Imphal West District.

Dr. Branko Mimic, the Lead Congenital Cardiac Surgeon of Healing Little Hearts, United Kingdom said that operation on very small child like Master Manthai Phom, 2 months old boy could be challenging, requires highly qualified and experienced doctors, nurses, technicians and highly sophisticated equipments and infrastructure. He said SKY has the high standard infrastructure and equipments.
Dr. L. Shyamkishore, Chief Cardiologist and Chairman of SKY Hospital and President of Manipur Heart Foundation expressed his profound happiness and satisfaction on the success of the biggest and most complex free camp ever organised in the North Eastern India which helped save lives of so many children.
He stated that majority of children born with various heart defects do not survive unless they are diagnosed and treated appropriately at an early stage. These 9 children who have availed of the opportunity provided during the camp are fortunate and will now grow up like any normal person.
He further said that SKY Hospital in association with Manipur Heart Foundation has been providing such free heart surgical program for children born with various heart defects on the regular basis and the Healing Little Hearts, United Kingdom has contributed to the ongoing program.
Dr. Shyamkishore appealed to the people of Manipur and other North Eastern states of India to be aware of the program at SKY Hospital to help give such children a new lease of life. On 15 March, 2019, Dr. Shyamkishore joined the happy children and the parents at the cake cutting ceremony celebrating the new life of the children after the successful operation.
